Given this circumstance we might say that Manet's costume is a decoy, for while it doubtless attracts us, to read it as an index of this painter's self-image may be to fall for a cunning deception. In fact, Manet's gaze appears to penetrate his social mien - the self-as-spectacle - so as to plumb deeper leagues of his private identity. arises, however, as one takes note of a telling detail: the painter's gaze itself, at once redoubtable and reflexive, subtly tempers our first impression. As if to lionize Manet as Fantin's gregarious and convivial creature, we often explain the Self-Portrait with a Palette as a souvenir of personal achievement, an automemento in which Manet celebrates himself as the "stylish and successful" gentleman painter.(3) That assessment has the merit of economy, for it derives simply from Manet's costume - the suave frock coat, the cravat with pearl clip, the rakish bowler - with which he strikes an impressive, if not exceedingly confident, pose. Nobody questions whether its sense of gravity genuinely arises from the artist's nature the mood is evident, for instance, in Manet's photographic portrait by Nadar of 1865.(2) Still, we tend to expect of this "hero" of modern painting the amiable mien of a social aesthete, that is, the congenial if reticent flaneur with top hat and walking stick - as Manet had been figured for posterity by Henri Fantin-Latour in a flattering portrait of 1867. This rather troubled image of Manet is unlike any other of him extant. Both hands thrust into his coat pockets, the painter shifts toward the raking light to train his attention on an urgent problem. Manet spreads wide his feet, so as to mime a steady, if haunted statue. Executed about the same time as the portrait with palette, it is a painter's full-length posturing as a pensive scholar. Manet's only other serf-portrait is notably different in conception. Even Manet's palette takes a critical stance in this tight cloister: at once a common tool and a painter's coat-of-arms, or auto-insignia, it is held at the hip like a heraldic battle shield, as if to steel the painter against his own self-scrutiny. In sum, we serve as a complex foil that returns Manet's gaze to his own body and the canvas itself, in a continuous three-way shuttle. This Self-Portrait with a Palette is one of only two formal self-portraits that Manet conceived in his prolific, if succinct career.(1) As the painter gazes outward, he engages us in no simple standoff rather, our position is uncertain, perhaps that of a portrait sitter, the painter himself, or a mirror before him. EXCERPT: In 1878, at the age of forty-six, Edouard Manet painted a picture of himself painting a picture. In turn, the subjective visuality of nineteenth-century modernism signals perhaps not so radical a departure from a former "ocularcentric regime" than is commonly presumed. It is proposed that the early historical precedence of a "mirror mode" in realist painting calls for a new, multivalent reading of the praxis of mimesis (and its public reception) in the premodern era. This essay is a hermeneutic investigation into a "mirror mode of looking," which the author defines as a strategy of semiotic representation inherited by Manet from a host of predecessors, including Van Eyck, Titian, Velázquez, Steen, Vermeer, and Watteau.

Paradoxical, and a little frustrating – especially if you are keen to get a glimpse of what you're meant to be running away from. There is a strange paradox in that the only way to stop the relentless onslaught of the Slender Man is to look at him, but if you look at him for too long you will die. The sense of threat and anticipation is built upon through the clever use of soundscapes. While there is an element of fear to the game, the sense of challenge is diminished by the fact that there is only one enemy to avoid – and the original Slender Man stories are far more terrifying than anything game manages to conjure up. There are effectively eight levels to work through and there is no real variety in what you need to do - the difficulty level just increases. Yes, there is the element of suspense to make things a little more interesting, but at its heart, this is an incredibly simple game with very limited gameplay. Unfortunately, to cut to the chase, it's a bit boring. This limited defence forces a sense of helplessness, as the best way to survive in the game is to run whenever in danger. The character is armed only with a flashlight. Slender: The Arrival uses similar mechanics to its predecessor, The Eight Pages. The majority of the game takes place in abandoned areas (house, defunct mine, etc.), each with different objectives. Thus from a licensing standpoint, the annual NIL value per student-athlete could range from $1,000 – $10,000, whereas professional athletes garner between $50,000 – $400,000 for the same group usage licenses.ĭeveloping a methodology to estimate what student-athletes can earn through free market endorsements and other usages of their NIL is not necessarily a straightforward affair. On the collegiate side, if we average the Top 10 most valuable apparel deals in college athletics, we get an AAV of about $8,000,000 per school, which when divided by an average of 750 student-athletes, gives us an approximate value of $10,000 per-student athlete. Nike’s licensing deal with the NBA is for a reported $1 billion over 8 years, for an Average Annual Value (AAV) of $125 million, which works out to approximately $275,000 per-player annually. We can also reference apparel licensing deals both within professional and collegiate sports to assess the range of compensation student-athletes might receive. Interestingly, without the licensing fee, the per-player value of the game (revenue / student-athlete pool) yields the approximately $7,200 per-student athlete – equivalent to the upper limit payment used in the settlement. Dividing $80 million among slightly more than 11,000 student-athletes in FBS football, and then multiplying by 15% would in turn give you a licensing fee of approximately $1,000 per student-athlete. EA Sports executive Joel Linzner testified that the NCAA football game generated approximately $80 million per year in revenue on the sale of approximately 2 million units. G ame publishers typically pay licensing fees to the major sports leagues ranging from 10% to 15% of a game’s revenue. The payments averaged out to $1,200 per student-athlete, with a maximum payment of $7,200, depending on the number of games in which they appeared and whether they were closely identified in those games. On the upper-end, Take-Two Interactive will pay the National Basketball Association and its players’ union as much as $1.1 billion over the next seven years to continue making NBA 2K, which works out to $400,000 per-player annually.įrom a collegiate athlete standpoint, last year Electronic Arts agreed to pay approximately $40 million to more than 29,000 current and former players. and Sony Corp, and trading-card maker Panini America Inc, which equates to approximately $48,000 per-player each year. The NFL and MLB Players Associations receive approximately $120 million in combined annual revenue from licensing deals with video game publishers Electronic A rts Inc. Recent legal settlements involving student-athletes also provide valuation guidance. The simplest starting point for analysis is group licensing, where data is readily available on deals between video game manufacturers and professional sports unions. Several existing valuation benchmarks can be used to define ranges of compensation for various usages of NIL in both college athletics and professional sports. In a continued effort to provide intercollegiate leaders with key insights, AthleticDirectorU teamed up with Navigate Research – one of the most trusted sources of media, marketing, and sponsorship valuations in the industry – to determine how much student-athletes can make off their NIL in both group licensing and free-market scenarios. As college athletics continue to grapple with the implementation of a fair and balanced set of rules for student-athletes to monetize their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL), the question of just how much money they could generate has been the subject of much speculation. Actually, the D&D 3.0 skill animal empathy is still there, so this could be an indication that the skills were not made to conform to 3.5. Skills are also significantly different from D&D 3.5 crafts, knowledges and professions are all entirely separate, which means alchemy is once again its own entire skill. Still, from that review and this blog post, I get the impression that the book is about as lopsided as the PDFs. This re-enrichment recovery of the residual uranium-235 is now in practice in some parts of the world e.g. Depleted uranium was originally stored as an unusable waste product ( uranium hexafluoride) in the hope that improved enrichment processes could extract additional quantities of the fissionable U-235 isotope. Later in the decade, France and the Soviet Union began their nuclear weapons and nuclear power programs. History Įnriched uranium was first manufactured in the early 1940s when the United States and Britain began their nuclear weapons programs. According to a 2013 study, despite the use of DU by coalition forces in Fallujah, no DU has been found in soil samples taken from the city, although another study of 2011 had indicated elevated levels of uranium in tissues of the city inhabitants. A 2005 epidemiology review concluded: "In aggregate the human epidemiological evidence is consistent with increased risk of birth defects in offspring of persons exposed to DU." A 2021 study concluded that DU from exploding munitions did not lead to Gulf War illness in American veterans deployed in the Gulf War. According to an article in Al Jazeera, DU from American artillery is suspected to be one of the major causes of an increase in the general mortality rate in Iraq since 1991. Several studies using cultured cells and laboratory rodents suggest the possibility of leukemogenic, genetic, reproductive, and neurological effects from chronic exposure. The actual level of acute and chronic toxicity of DU is also controversial. The aerosol or spallation frangible powder produced by impact and combustion of depleted uranium munitions can potentially contaminate wide areas around the impact sites, leading to possible inhalation by human beings. The biological half-life (the average time it takes for the human body to eliminate half the amount in the body) for uranium is about 15 days. It is only weakly radioactive because of the long radioactive half-life of 238 Normal functioning of the kidney, brain, liver, heart, and numerous other systems can be affected by exposure to uranium, a toxic metal. The use of DU in munitions is controversial because of concerns about potential long-term health effects. Most of the alpha radiation comes from 238 U content, which is 55 ppm in uranium from the Oklo Mine as well as all other natural sources, but will be lower in depleted uranium in accordance with the degree of depletion.ĭU is about 60% as radioactive as natural uranium. The timeouts are there so that if a target or gump does not come up the way that it should, the macro will skip back to the beginning. It is important to follow the instructions given if building the macro from scratch in regard to editing the timeouts. Wait For Target/Gump vs Manual Pauses: As much as possible, Wait for Target and Wait for Gump pauses were used so that players with varying pings would experience the macro the same way. Many times, a more advanced and useful macro can be made depending upon the setup that you have to train the skill. Many options are available when you Right-click on a line item. The macros have been built to provide the greatest applicability to players of varying ping times however, some adjustment is bound to be necessary to get things working perfectly on your computer. You should feel free to edit and modify them however you wish. The action will be recorded into your macro.Įditing and Creating Your Own Macros: The macros presented are a guide and a good starting point. You can Right-click on a line item in your macro, select Begin Recording Here, navigate to the Hotkeys tab, and then execute what you are looking for. Stop Macro: This does exactly what you would think.Įxecute Selection: When you are recording your own line items into razor, it can be useful to execute things that you see in the Hotkeys tab without having to assign them to a hotkey and using them. You can also use Razor’s other targeting commands to accomplish the same. Set Last Target: This allows you to assign many things in the game to Razor’s last target. This can all be done on the Hotkey tab of Razor. In addition, after you create a macro, it can be helpful to assign that to a hotkey as well. Hotkeys: There are at least two hotkeys that you will want to set up when using these macros. When you do this, make sure you only have 1 instance of razor open at the time, and remember that modifications will be written to the file when the last instance of razor is closed out. Many times, you will want to make small adjustments to the macro or add your own line items. When you re-enter Razor, you will see that the macro is built and ready to use. Next you can simply copy and paste the code provided, save the macro, and then close it. Then, you can navigate to C:\Programs\Razor\Macros and open up the given macro file you created with Notepad. You can simply create new blank macros in razor, assign them names, and then exit out of all instances of razor and the client(don’t just logout). The last section for each macro contains the actual code for the macro. This is useful if you want to build the macro yourself from scratch. The macro steps are in bold, and there is often information to the right to help in setting things up properly. Be sure to read the macro description as it often gives some specific information that can be used to get the most out of the macro.įollowing the description is an approximation of what the macro looks like as you would see it in razor. Date Night Bowling is a unique (yet cute) casual gameplay experience.Ī Nintendo Switch review copy of Date Night Bowling was provided by Serenity Forge for this review. However, it is also fun to play with a friend, a spouse, significant other, or family member, just to see how well you do. In truth, I think Date Night Bowling is a great game for Bowling fans. Other than that issue, Date Night Bowling is a hidden gem. The AI is absolutely nuts, and it is difficult to predict their movements. The only issue I have with the game is that one of the mini-games (High Five) is a little too steep in terms of difficulty. I also like that there’s nothing stopping you from making same-sex relationships, so you can live out your bowling-date fantasies all you want. The monkey doesnt spin around in its ball when you start gaining momentum. The new sound effects for the rolling ball, for collecting bananas are kind of unpleasant and weirdly loud. The mini-games are creative, and really do make you feel like you’re out on a date night with a friend, trying to see if that connection will bloom into something more. A large part of wanting these games on modern consoles was to play its awesome multiplayer modes with friends online. The controls are great, the environments are done with beautiful pixel art, and the game is just plain fun. Super Monkey Ball Switch Inferno solution for Banana Mania and Super Monkey Ball 2. Did your Date have the same sparks you did? Or was this a mismatched connection? You may be dropping HD Rumble functionality or motion controls. At the end of the game of Bowling, after all the mini-games are done, your connection bar will show just how well the date went. It all sounds somewhat simple, but the mini-games are fun and some can even be a bit challenging.ĭepending on how well you do at the mini-games, your “connection” meter will increase, which shows how much chemistry you have with your date. The mini-games consist of all sorts of different things, from finding the right shoes for your date via a matching mini-game to trying to high-five them without missing. Just got the switch version of Banana mania today Im super excited but would rather not use motion controls. If you aren’t playing a solo game, then after each round (of a 10 round game), there will be a mini-game. Sega’s HD remaster of Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz originally released for Wii in 2006 will do away with the motion control of the original in favor of tightened analog controls. This is great from an accessibility standpoint since motion controls can be difficult for people with limited range of motion, muscle weakness, or other disabilities. Some of the multiplayer games you’ll play once and never again but Monkey Target and the sports games are great fun and a good example of the kind of offline party game that has all but disappeared since the Wii era put them out of fashion.I should also mention that unlike a lot of other “sports” titles on the Nintendo Switch, Date Night Bowling doesn’t utilize motion controls. Some of the games are more closely based on the main single-player game, while the sequel also introduced more complicated concepts such as Monkey Tennis, Baseball, and Soccer, a lightgun game called Monkey Shot, and the Star Fox-esque Monkey Dogfight. The most famous one is probably Monkey Target, where you have to glide your monkey to land on a range of targets on the ground, but the self-explanatory Monkey Golf, Billiards, and Bowling are also good value. None of them are very complicated, which is again the entire point, but they do have a surprising amount of content in terms of extra maps and levels. Usually holding the camera down helps, but since the dead zone has been changed, it is really weird for me to balance your character with the camera adjusting behind you. Sega was able to tempt themselves away from overcomplicating it by instead concentrating on a range of multiplayer party games, that work a bit like extended Mario Party mini-games. Well some of my experience is that controls are mostly fine besides when balancing on small platforms. That’s really all there is to the single-player and to be honest even the sequel seemed somewhat unnecessary, as one of the key pleasures of the concept is how simple it is. What isn’t obvious until you start playing is that you’re not controlling the ball directly but instead the maze itself, gently moving it around like a carnival game to get your monkey moving at the correct speed and angle.
